After se eing the seats that the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was going to have, I have been patiently waiting to see the pricing for it. I had seriously hoped that this was going to be my STI-replacement!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But at $33,245 ($34745 for the DCT-equipped model) I think it’s a hard pass for me. The $30,600 2020 performance package equipped Veloster N was a lot of car for the price. I don’t feel the same way about the 2021 model.

It can be argued that Hyundai added enough tech and features to justify that level of price increase. It’s just that besides the seats, none of that other stuff really matters to me personally.

It will be interesting to see how sales for the 2021 model goes.

Does it put down Honda Civic Type R numbers for 0-60, skidpad G, etc. now?

If not, then this price bump is a bad move. A Civic Type R is much more car for a dangerously close price. If Hyundai could just bring the i30 N (Europe’s Elantra N hatchback & liftback) to the USA, they’d do a lot better.

Also, there’s this thing called the VW GTI that’s cheaper and less weird than either the Civic or the Veloster.

* personally, I love the Veloster N and its funky doors, but I’m not the average buyer with the usual priorities.

I’d buy the Veloster over the CTR based on looks alone. But I’d buy the GTI because it’s better at bein g a useful  hatchback.

At one point in time, Japanese brands were a value proposition in the US. Now look at what a Taco’ cost and how well they hold their value. I hope Hyundai and Kia aren’t jumping ahead of themselves here. They’ve come lightyears and build a compelling product, but putting something like this in Type R territory is a bad move unless they can decimate it. They can’t. Not yet. So they shouldn’t. They also don’t quite have the clout of Japanese brands yet.

I agreed, but on the veloster discord channel someone mentioned that they saved about $50 a month on insurance vs his 2020 N because the insurance cares about all the safety tech. Now $50 a month over 5 years is the $3000 difference plus you get the sweet seats. But mine used at $26K feels like an even better deal, seats aside.

Just gonna say, wait like 6 months after they come out lol 1-2k off in incentives and 0% financing can really turn that MSRP back into a deal

Well your numbers appear to be including destination, but this is still a little weird. With the performance package, the sticker on the 2020 was right at $30k, I forget the exact numbers. Now with the standard performance package it’s $32,250. Be st I can tell all they added besides the PP was the seats and safety nannies, but *not* active cruise control. Still no heated seats or sunroof even as an option.

I tried a 2020 Veloster N PP before I bought my Civic Si, and didn’t like it all that much. The sporty goodies are all well and good but the Veloster form factor is a big negative for me. I hate the claustrophobic feeling inside and it’s nowhere near as practical as my Si sedan, which came standard with a sunroof and heated seats. Honda added their Honda Sensing suite of safety nannies to the 2020 Si and *included* active cruise, but they only raised the price $600 over the 2019.

I really think Hyundai made a mistake with launching the N brand in the US with the Veloster. Sure the auto journalists all had a fun time chucking them around a race track when it first came out , but expecting customers will want to live with it as a daily driver when everything else in the segment (except for the Si coupe) is a much more practical sedan or hatch, seems like a missed opportunity. The back seat in the Veloster is more usable than the Si coupe thanks to its 1 back door and the compromised headroom in the back of the Si coupe, but that’s it. And the Si sells something like 4x as many sedans as coupes. Oh, and my Si sedan weighs over 200 lbs *less* than the Veloster N.

Hyundai would’ve sold way more Ns if they brought over the i30 N but I guess they think Americans are scared of 5-door hatchbacks , and eventually we’ll see an Elantra N sedan. I could live with that just like I’m happy with my Si sedan, but come on Hyundai, heated seats and a sunroof aren’t crazy luxury features.

The 7k difference between the Veloster and the CTR definitely played a big part in me getting the veloster. At this new price I agree, the CTR just becomes the better choice.

The CTR is another $5k more than the raised price here which is actually $32,250 before destination. And it’s much easier to actually *buy* a Veloster N.

Personally I bought a 2020 Si sedan because I wanted certain features like a sunroof, heated seats and active cruise which apparently both Hyundai and Honda think are a luxury bridge too far in both the CTR and Veloster N.

The GTI starts only a few grand more than the Si but to get those features on the GTI combined with the adaptive dampers that are standard on the Si, CTR and N, you have to get the GTI Autobahn  which stickers for the same $37k as the CTR.

This is kind of where I’m at.  I’m now considering just waiting for the MK8 GTI as it’s far more utilitarian with its actual 4 doors.

The i30 N is the car they should have brought, I 100% agree. While my car isn’t the primary family hauler (My wife has a’20 Tuscon Ultimate), the I30N would have been a far easier sell for me. The Velsoter N can carry my family and I, we’re definitely at the limits of the Veloster N’s capacity. I’ve been in the Elantra GT and that car is far more utilitarian. I think it has over 11 more cubic feet of space with the seats down than the veloster . I forget the amount with the seats up, but it was also significantly more. More back seat headroom too.

This is an interesting point and one I had not considered.  I’m going to have to price quote it against my STI.  If those safety features really are worth that much of a discount, I would probably be able to see a drastic drop in my rates.  Enough to buy a Veloster N? I don’t know.

I understand no sunroof, the roof line makes that a challenge, at least for a modern sunroof that slides into the roof instead of above it. However, NO HEATED SEATS!

Kinja'd!!!

Not having heated seats was part of what made me walk away from a 2016 Veloster turbo Spec R back in 2018. I cent believe that’s still a problem on the most premium model of the car.

Yeah I can’t speak for the new model but I test drive a 2016 and I could not sit in the back seat. I hit my head on the way in and couldn’t sit straight without hitting the roof once I was in.  The rear seats are for children and small adult under like 5’5” lol. Now if you plan on removing the backseat and only using that space for cargo you’d be just fine.

I’m 5'11" and the Veloster N juuust passed the sit-behind-myself test. My knees didn’t touch the back of the front seat. There’s enough room for me to make use of , but i t’s more cramped and claustrophobic than I’d prefer. That includes the seats. The old ones look like big-bolstered econobox seats, but they’re much less comfortable than the much more attractive looking seats in my Si.

The i30/Elantra GT in addition to being more roomy & practical also has much more glass to look out of than the Veloster . In some markets there’s a premium package or something like that which includes a pano roof.

Hyundai most likely will never bring it here, but we will be getting full-N versions of the Kona and new Elantra. The new Elantra N Line looks ok, but I hate the ridged fake “windows” on the C-pillar. The interior looks pretty swanky .

Usually Hyundai & Kia are great at throwing all kinds of options in their cars, but the Elantra N Line has no performance hardware outside its 201 hp 1.6T motor. The Veloster N PP has a lot of performance hardware, and enough infotainment & safety nannies, but it’s missing a lot of what are now regular-car features.

If Hyundai includes at least the option to add a few features like heated seats, sunroof & active cruise on the Elantra and/or Kona N, I would consider them, but I’m planning to keep my Si a long time anyway.

The Veloster Turbo & Turbo Ultimate have heated seats and a half pano roof. There’s no glass over the back seats but almost the entire width of the roof over the front seats is glass. T he panel slides up out of the roof so as to not reduce rear headroom.

Kinja'd!!!

The R-Spec is the lowest of the turbo trims and doesn’t have these options, it’s the stripper-in-the-name-of-performance trim.

I get that the N is the performance model but they could at least offer some kind of premium package to add in some of the equipment from the lower-perf or mance trims. They actually do this on the i30 N and i30 Fastback N in other countries.

I didn’t realize there was a sunroof option. I would assume N doesn’t have it  due the to structural rigidity and weight costs of a sunroof but some people don’t give a damn about that lol

Sure there are performance compromises, but you can get a sunroof on many cars that have higher performance than this thing. At least offer it as an option for those who prefer it, and let the cheapskates and wannabe racers do without.
